Michael Jackson News

What is the man doing?!

01/02/2002 Marcel Avram sued Michael

Concert promoter Marcel Avram has sued Michael Jackson, claiming the pop star is looking for another promoter for an as-yet-unannounced world tour despite a signed agreement with Avram. He is seeking in excess of $20 million in damages.

According to the complaint, filed last week in Superior Court in Santa Barbara County, Avram -- who handled Jackson's 1992-93 "Dangerous" and 1996-97 "History" tours -- was asked to pay a substantial amount of money Jackson owed to doctors in Germany.

Avram's attorney, Skip Miller, declined to say why Jackson owed money to German doctors and why he didn't pay it himself. He did say, however, that the amount was several hundred thousand dollars.

In exchange for Avram's paying the doctors, Jackson agreed in writing that Avram would promote his next world tour. But, the suit alleges, Jackson is believed to be negotiating with other unknown parties regarding the promotion of his upcoming tour. Jackson has not responded to phone calls and letters from Avram, said Miller, who works at Christensen, Miller, Fink, Jacobs, Glaser, Weil & Shapiro.

Also pending is a suit Avram filed in June 2000 claiming the pop star backed out of two millennium concerts planned for Sydney and Honolulu. In that case, Avram is seeking in excess of $25 million for lost profits plus expenses for two charity concerts he arranged for Jackson in Seoul and Munich.

10/01/2002 Michael Jackson Attends American Music Awards

Last night, Michael Jackson appeared on stage at the American Music Awards to accept the Artist of the Century award. The King of Pop did not perform during the show. A taped performance of "Man In The Mirror" from the October 21st charity concert in Washington D.C. was originally scheduled to air during the American Music Awards ceremony but was finally cancelled.

25/12/2001 CBS to Rebroadcast MSG Special January 9

In what many in the media are calling a response to the new lawsuit by American Music Awards producer Dick Clark, CBS announced on Friday that they were planning to re-broadcast the MSG concert special on January 9 (9-11 PM), the same night of the AMAs.

As first reported last week, AMA producer Dick Clark sued National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences president Michael Greene for preventing artists -- including Michael -- from performing at the AMAs for fear of being banned from the Grammys (a CBS event).

According to the lawsuit, Michael had told AMA producers he'd be there to perform at next month's kudocast but backed out a few weeks later, citing Grammy politics as the reason.

A CBS spokesman said the scheduling of the Jackson repeat was not a response to Clark's suit. Indeed, he said the rebroadcast date was set in early December, before Clark's lawsuit was filed.

CBS programmers, however, are no doubt looking to put a dent in ABC's AMA ratings: It's unusual for a network to schedule a repeat of such a major special so soon after its original airing, according to Reuters.

CBS will also be trying to re-package next month's anniversary special rebroadcast as more than just a repeat. It is expected to include footage of the King of Pop performing not seen in the original telecast.

19/12/2001 Dick Clark Sues Recording Academy Head Because of Jackson

Dick Clark filed a $10 million lawsuit against Recording Academy President Michael Greene Wednesday, accusing him of barring artists who appear first on Clark's American Music Awards from performing on the Grammy Awards.

A visibly angry Clark said Greene persuaded Michael Jackson to break a promise to appear in the upcoming American Music Awards show on Jan. 9. The Grammys air on Feb. 27.

"Mr. Greene has caused me a lot of pain and a lot of stress,'' Clark said. "I've known Michael Jackson since he was a kid. To have another party interfere in that relationship makes me very, very angry.''

Jackson publicist Dan Forman didn't immediately return a voicemail message. Academy spokesman Ron Roker and spokeswoman Maureen O'Connor didn't immediately return telephone calls seeking comment from Greene.

In past years, Clark said Greene was responsible for preventing Britney Spears from appearing on the American Music Awards and banned Sean "P. Diddy'' Combs and Toni Braxton from performing on the Grammys because they appeared on the AMAs.

In the lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, Clark accused Greene and 10 unnamed defendants of interfering with contracts and prospective business relations, and unfair competition.

Besides damages, Clark wants the alleged blacklisting tactics rescinded. Clark said he didn't sue the Recording Academy because he doesn't believe the general membership approves of Greene's tactics.

Clark said he had spoken with Greene about the issue in the past and had received assurances it wouldn't occur again.

Clark said he was compiling a list of all performers forced to back out of the American Music Awards or the Grammy Awards in past years because of the alleged tactics.

The Grammys are considered the more prestigious of the two awards; the Grammy winners are determined by members of the Recording Academy, while winners at the American Music Awards are based on popularity.

01/11/2001 Invincible UK and US sales

We have received the latest official USA chart PREDICTIONS (i.e. not actual sales but a prediction based on first day sales) and the news is that Michael Jackson is still expected to land in first place with Invincible on the Official Album Chart.

However, a note of caution is sounded by industry website Hits Daily Double. "It's too close to call at this point," they state, "but in the early going, Jackson has the edge over the Backstreet Boys, whose Hits: Chapter One (Jive) is running close behind Invincible."

American music industry estimates see Michael Jackson reaching total of over 300,000 in one week in the States, with the Backstreet Boys probably clocking in just under 300,000.

(It is perhaps telling that previous media reports last week hyped up the Backstreet Boys' predicted sales, saying that Jive had shipped 600,000 copies in the first week to meet demand...)

Meanwhile, many media sources are expressing surprise at Michael Jackson's opening day success and many record stores have had to order in new stock to meet demand.

However, there is a historical trend that suggests that Greatest Hits albums climb higher throughout the week while albums of new material debut with higher figures on first day sales. For this reason, weekend sales of the two albums will be crucial.

The following Top 5 comprises purely of official album sales from Monday in the UK.

1. 34282 MICHAEL JACKSON INVINCIBLE
2. 13851 STEPS GOLD - THE GREATEST HITS
3. 11122 MISTEEQ LICKIN' ON BOTH SIDES
4. 10424 KYLIE MINOGUE FEVER
5. 6741 ALICIA KEYES SONGS IN A MINOR

As of Wednesday morning, Michael has sold 48,669 copies of Invincible in the UK and is in first place. Steps are in second place with 20,868.

That means that since Monday, Michael has enjoyed a 14,387 increase compared to Steps' 6,835 increase.

At close of business Wednesday in the UK, Michael Jackson's Invincible was still heading toward the No.1 position in Sunday's album chart. Invincible has so far sold 58,616 (an increase of 9,947 on the previous day). In Second place is the Steps greatest hits with sales so far of 26,063 (an increase of 5,377 on the previous day).

The final official chart will be revealed on Sunday.

Diddy, Faith Evans, Huey Lewis, Billy Gilman, Mya, Usher and many others.

Michael Jackson had originally planned to open his performance with “Heal The World.” However, due to many delays, when it was time for him to perform, the concert was very much behind schedule. Michael was then asked to shorten his number.
His performance started with “Man In The Mirror” and was followed by a speech.
Michael addressed the crowd with the following words:
“D.C., I want you to know I love you very much. I would like each and everyone of you here tonight to look at each person next to you. Look at them in the eyes. Each and every person right here, look at each person next to you in the eyes. Now, join the hands, each together, join the hands and reach to the heavens. Reach to the heavens, everyone! And feel it, feel humanity!
Don’t do it because I’m asking you to. Do it because this is the right thing to do.
Now I ask you for a moment of love and silence. Tonight, we all stand united and ask: what more can i give?
When we leave here tonight, let us take this love and give it to all the people everywhere in every corner of the earth. And that’s what we can give, and that will make the difference, that will make the change. It’s very important.
To the families of the victims of September 11th that are here with us tonight: you are not alone. You are in our hearts, you are in our thoughts and you are in our prayers. Thank you for being here tonight.”

Michael was then joined on stage by all the artists that had previously performed. The concert ended with a special performance of Michael’s anthem “What More Can I Give” by the all-star choir.

The United We Stand - What More Can I Give concert raised more than $3 million dollars from ticket sales. Highlights from the show have been edited in a
two-hour television special that will air on November 1st on ABC in the USA.
Donations will be solicited during the TV special. All proceeds will go to the American Red Cross Relief Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund and the Pentagon Relief Fund to benefit the families of the victims of September 11th terrorist attacks.

28/09/2001 Expanded Editions - Review

On October 15th, Sony Music will release the Expanded Editions of Michael Jackson’s OFF THE WALL, THRILLER, BAD and DANGEROUS.

OFF THE WALL

Two bonus tracks are featured on this remastered special edition of OFF THE WALL: the original 1978 demo versions of “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” (4:48) and “Working Day And Nigh” (4:19).
These captivating pieces of music history demonstrate Michael Jackson’s natural talent to create and produce music. Both tracks were recorded at the Jacksons’ home in Encino, California. Janet and Randy Jackson participated in the recordings. Randy played the bass and keyboards while Janet handled the percussions using glass bottles among other things!
Both tracks are home demos with rudimentary arrangements. Yet, the foundations of the songs are there. The amazing talent of Michael Jackson as a music creator is obvious.
So much for the skeptics who thought legendary producer Quincy Jones was behind Michael’s inspiration.

On an amusing note, the demo version of “Working Day And Night” starts off with a funny squabbling between Randy, Michael and Janet. «Michael, turn down the headphones, man!» yells Randy. «He’s trying, Randy!» snaps back Janet.

The expanded version of OFF THE WALL also contains audio interviews with producer Quincy Jones and composer Rod Temperton where they share their memories on the making of the album.

Note: The expanded edition of OFF THE WALL was to include the original demo version of “Rock With You.” However, this track has finally been removed from the tracklisting.

THRILLER

The expanded version of the THRILLER album contains 4 bonus tracks.
The first one is “Someone In The Dark,” the instant classic that Michael originally recorded for the E.T. Storybook. It is the “Opening Version” (4:47) of the song that is available on this record.
Then comes a demo of “Billie Jean.” This early version of Michael’s masterpiece is extraordinary. Although he has no lyrics for the song yet (except for the chorus line), Michael performs the complete vocals in total improvisation. This is legendary art in the making. A must-hear.
The next bonus track on the record is the amazing recording session of the “Thriller” rap with actor Vincent Price. The track features the never-before-released second verse of the famous rap and the complete uncut infectious closing laughter. A hilarious moment.
The final bonus track on this special edition is the never-before-released song “Carousel” (1:49), a left-off of the THRILLER sessions. “Carousel” was written and composed by Michael Sembello. It is a superb song that will undoubtedly become a favorite among fans. Unfortunately, the song has been shortened for the expanded version. The second verse and several choruses have been edited out. Fans will have to content themselves with one third of the actual song. Given the quality of the track, it is really too bad.

The expanded version of THRILLER also contains audio interviews with producer Quincy Jones and composer Rod Temperton. These interesting insights deal with the making of the album, Vincent Price’s participation, “Carousel” and the videos.

Note: The expanded edition of THRILLER was to include the original demo version of “Starlight” (eventually retitled “Thriller”). However, this track has finally been removed from the tracklisting.

BAD

The expanded version of the BAD album features 3 bonus tracks: “Streetwalker,” “Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu” and “Fly Away.”
“Streetwalker” (5:49) is a never-before-released song from the BAD sessions. It was originally supposed to be included to the album instead of “Another Part Of Me.” Although the track is inspired and full of energy, it is fair to say that it ultimately didn’t measure up to “Another Part Of Me.” When listening to this song, fans will finally discover where the intro doo-woops from the live versions of “Heartbreak Hotel” and “The Way You make Me Feel” come from!

“Todo Mi Amor Eres Tu” (4:04) is the Spanish version of “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You.” It has previously been released in 1987 in Spanish-speaking markets. It is sung in Spanish by Michael and Siedah Garrett (lyrics translated by Ruben Blades). This special version is now available to all.

“Fly Away” (3:26) is an original song written, composed and performed by Michael Jackson. It was finally cut from the final selection of tracks for the BAD album. Although this song was covered by sister Rebbie on her 1998 Yours Faithfully album, Michael’s mid-tempo version was never-before-released. “Fly Away” is another instant classic that definitely deserved to be released from the King of Pop’s vaults. Note: this version of “Fly Away” is an advanced demo. It is not a final mix.

As with the other expanded versions, BAD contains audio interviews with producer Quincy Jones where he talks about recording “Bad” with Prince, his favorite songs on the album and shooting the “Bad” video.

DANGEROUS

Contrary to what we previously announced, the expanded version of DANGEROUS won't include a remix of "Dangerous" instead of the original track.
Although it was originally planned and officially announced by Sony Music, it recently changed. The expanded version will now only include the original 14 tracks.
Note: All promotional documents issued by Sony Music that include "Dangerous - Roger's Rough Dub" as a bonus track on the album were released prior to the change.

18/09/2001 Quote from Michael Jackson

In a recent statement to Rolling Stone magazine, Michael Jackson elaborated on the reasons behind his "What More Can I Give" humanitarian project.
He said, "I'm not one to sit back and point the finger and say, 'Oh, I feel bad for what happened to them.' I want to do something, to give to help those who lost their parents, who lost their mothers and their fathers. Those are our people. Those are our children. Those are our parents.
"I want the whole world to sing [What More Can I Give], to bring us together as a world, because a song is a mantra, something you repeat over and over. And we need peace, we need giving, we need love, we need unity."

17/09/2001 What More Can I Give

Michael Jackson has invited major American artists to join him in the recording of a new song to benefit the victims of Tuesday's tragic events.

The King of Pop hopes to raise $50 million for the survivors and their families. He will produce a song titled "What More Can I Give," and record it with an all-star cast of performers.

Michael Jackson is currently in the studio working on "What More Can I Give." This week, a demo version of the song will be sent to the artists committed to the project. Michael Jackson wishes to release the song as soon as possible.

In a statement sent to the media on Sunday, Michael Jackson said, "I believe in my heart that the music community will come together as one and rally to the aid of thousands of innocent victims. There is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now and through this effort each one of us can play an immediate role in helping comfort so many people.
We have demonstrated time and again that music can touch our souls. It is time we used that power to help us begin the process of healing immediately.
The lyrics to 'What More Can I Give' seek to help the world's citizens find solace in the wake of the attack on America and to create a sense of global unity in the face of mindless violence and mass murder."

All proceeds from the song will go to a relief fund for the families of the victims and the survivors.

Michael Jackson wrote and composed "What More Can I Give" in early 1999 but never released it. The song was inspired by Nelson Mandela.
On March 1999, as he was preparing "Michael Jackson & Friends," his charity concerts in Munich and Seoul, Michael Jackson released a statement to the press in which he refered to his creating "What More Can I Give."
He said, "In an earlier conversation I had this year with President Mandela, we discussed the concept of giving and the words 'What More Can I Give' kept coming into my mind. That will be a song of mine and a theme for my [forthcoming] shows. We all have to give and we all have to do what we can to help end the needless suffering in the world."

Michael Jackson also plans on recording a Spanish version of "What More Can I Give" to be released simultaneously as the original English version.
There are currently no plans to include "What More Can I Give" to the INVINCIBLE album.

06/09/2001 Michael wows MTV Awards

The rumors were true. Tonight, Michael Jackson did indeed appear at
the MTV VMA Awards, guesting on the performance of 'N Sync.

During 'N Sync's performance, a giant etch-a-sketch appeared emblazoned
with the famous "king of Pop" bye line. There quickly followed that
famous silhouette, and Michael appeared as the screen was moved away. He surprised the crowd with a short but dazzling dance number. His cameo made headlines all over the world and was considered by observers and critics as the highlight of the show.

Michael looked great, with shorter, layered but wild hair and short
black jacket and pants over his trademark white t-shirt. He gave a
spirited cameo performance of many of his famous dance steps and ended
by pointing at the audience, as if to say "yes, more IS to come!"

Michael got the loudest cheers of the night, including those from his
sister Janet. And during the adverts CBS ran a trailer for their
forthcoming TV highlights of the MSG concerts, which they confirmed will
appear in November.

If you missed the performance, you will be able to catch it on an MTV
channel near you, repeatedly, for the next few weeks.

A classic Jackson track in every sense of the word. It comes with an album of equally high quality material. Given the current state of the record market, we should be grateful for that. If there's one thing that Jackson has always been pretty good at, it is getting punters into record shops and buying music."

Said David Gest, "Due to scheduling conflicts, Michael Jackson and *NSync will not have time to rehearse the 'Dancing Machine' number with the Jacksons in the way Michael planned to present it. Unfortunately, *NSync will be rehearsing their MTV Video Music Awards performance on Wednesday and Thursday while Michael will be rehearsing for his shows at the Garden. The two schedules just conflict and *NSync will not be in New York prior to that. Michael looks forward to working with *NSync in the future as he is a very big fan of the group.''

20/08/2001   "You Rock My World" Unauthorized Radio Debut

On Friday, August 17th, "You Rock My World" premiered on two radio stations in New York.
An unidentified source leaked the song to the radios without authorization from Sony Music or Michael Jackson.

Shortly afterwards, copies of the track have been created and circulated through the internet, ultimately reaching airplay on radio stations around the world.

Sony Music has now taken action to prevent radio stations from playing Michael Jackson's new single.
Both radio stations that originally premiered "You Rock My World" in New York have been ordered to not play the song anymore. And they have agreed to do so.

The copy of "You Rock My World" that has been played so far has not been validated by Michael Jackson. It is of poor quality and does not deliver the high standard in production that Michael Jackson has always dedicated himself to.

As a result of this unexpected development, Sony Music has decided to advance the official radio premiere of "You Rock My World." The King of Pop's new single will debut worldwide on August 29th, on Michael Jackson's birthday.
